somebody do something, anything soon
I know I can't be the only whatever I am in the room.
so why am I so lonely?
why I am so tired?
I need backup, I need company
I need to be inspired.

home again

after the canadian whirlwind. I really enjoyed the country.

On saturday, we saw a WONDERFUL movie called Across the Universe, which for some horrible reason is not playing in Walla Walla. (This is the reason I could never live permanently in a town as small as Walla. I need my indie movie theatres.) After, we met up with some other whitman folk for delicious Thai food and a comedy club (where it appears I may have left my favorite scarf!).

Monday was Canadian Thanksgiving, and so we took it upon ourselves to make a feast. We hunted down some fake meat, made mashed potatoes and sweet potato fries, boiled up some veggies, and had a feast that finished with store bought pumpik pie. We met a lovely woman at the grocery store who gave us the directions in how to make the potatoes. As we were pulling out of the parking lot, she came running after us to let us know that she forgot a step: "My family is heart healthy so we use olive oil, but you'd probably like to add some butter." And that, right there, is Canada.

This morning I also went to the bank and had a deaf teller. Something tells me you don't find a lot of those in the states. I feel like the US wouldn't go so far as to assume customers at a bank can communicate via keyboard. But who knows. Maybe I'm just prejudiced.

I really hope I'm able to get my scarf back.

oktoberfest was a bad beer

One day down in Canadian Adventures. Things accomplished yesterday:
Granville Island! including...
International food. Specifically Indian. Where I learned that "No Spice" still means a bit too spicy for me.
Lots of artisans. Canada is cool like that.
A brewery tour with beer tasting! One was good. A couple were... meh. and one I just did not enjoy. the lemon made it better.
We went to a crepes expo kind of place for dinner.
We used a LOT of of public transportation
We bought alcohol and got carded from a liquor store
We stood in a verrrry long line to get into a club, where we learned that the canadian boys are crazy
and then we slept in until 11:45.

the border patrol man wouldn't let us film him

So far the differences we've noticed in Canada include the following:

the green street lights blink
the walking man looks a bit like a sasquatch
signs are in english and FRENCH instead of english and spanish
kilometers... what?

mostly all we've seen is the streets. more tomorrow. hopefully we will experience ethnic food?

This is a travel blog.

I know it is silly to begin a travel blog while sitting at my home (or one of them) on my bed, with only my mind doing any significant traveling. But this is still my travel blog.

Why am I beginning it now? Because my room is messy and I don't feel like cleaning it. Also, because I am going to Canada on Friday, and even if it is a mostly silly trip, it is still somewhere that isn't Walla Walla and isn't The Greater Los Angeles Area and isn't the United States, and so I have decided that it should be documented.

Last night I was talking to my roommate and I realized how many future travel plans I have. I really want to see them written before me to visually processes it, so here they are:
Oct. 5-9, 2007 - Canada
March, 2008 - potential California road trip?
August, 2008 - Colombia and Brazil (oh please oh please)
November, 2008 - Boston (I hope!)
Jan - May, 2009 - NICARAGUA
summer, 2010 - a wonderful celebratory romp across Europe after graduation!
post-college - something wonderful and beautiful that will open my eyes to all the world has to offer (.. peace corps?)

And now, one final thing before I end this silly beginning.
here are the lyrics to "America" by Simon and Garfunkel

"Let us be lovers we'll marry our fortunes together."
"I've got some real estate here in my bag."
So we bought a pack of cigarettes and Mrs. Wagner pies
And we walked off to look for America

"Kathy," I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh
"Michigan seems like a dream to me now"
It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw
I've gone to look for America

Laughing on the bus
Playing games with the faces
She said the man in the gabardine suit was a spy
I said "Be careful his bowtie is really a camera"

"Toss me a cigarette, I think there's one in my raincoat"
"We smoked the last one an hour ago"
So I looked at the scenery, she read her magazine
And the moon rose over an open field

"Kathy, I'm lost," I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I'm empty and aching and I don't know why
Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all gone to look for America.

and I'm gone to look for the world.
